Nick Litwiller

My name is Nick Litwiller and this is my first endeavor into the wide world of blogging. As a soon-to-be senior at the University of Iowa, I am realizing more and more about the importance of refining my leadership and networking skills. In one of the toughest economical climates that America has seen since the great depression in the 1930’s, recent college graduates are feeling the ripple effects through lower placement rates and frozen salaries. In order to ensure that I can secure a job upon graduating in May 2010, I have found it imperative to separate myself from the crowd through professional development, quality internships, and other career-related activities.

Amazingly in tune with today’s overarching theme of “networking,” it is through networking that I became involved with ABI and Leadership Iowa University. Almost two years ago, one of my very good friends, Adam Kaduce, contacted me about an opportunity to become involved with the development of a new collegiate leadership program. I knew about the ABI and the impressive folks who were spearheading this initiative through my participation in LIU’s sister program, Business Horizons, as a high school student. Resulting from that conversation, I jumped on board LIU’s task force to provide a college students perspective and voice to ensure that the program matched the wants and needs of the audience that LIU was intended to cater to.

Through attending many of the meetings via teleconference over the past two years, my interest and overall excitement for what LIU had to offer began to skyrocket as the ABI’s brainchild began to really take shape. I realized that just being a task force committee member was not going to be enough to satiate my desire to experience LIU and that I was going to do everything I could to be a participant and be a part of the advent of Iowa’s newest, most dynamic collegiate leadership/professional development program.

I foresee LIU to be one of the greatest experiences in my college and young professional career and am excited to embrace the opportunities that it will provide for me. So here I am @ the end of Day 1 and am about to catch some Z’s for an eventful tomorrow…

Adam is a really great guy. How do you know him?

And how cool is it watching two years of work come together in one action packed week?

Congrats.

Nick, I'm very glad you did not stop your involvement with the task force and chose to come this week. I think the group will benefit from having your opinions and insight, and you will also get to meet many important players in your career success. Keep up your open mind and positive attitude-they will take you very far. I'm very glad you took the next step to take part in the week. Use that network to the absolute best of your ability-you are getting some wonderful opportunities thrown at you this week.
