Tim Neville

Northeast Iowa Community College

I currently attend Northeast Iowa Community College. I am a non-traditional student, enrolled in their AA Business Administration Program. I attend part time most of the time and await completion to transfer to a four year university where I can complete my Bachelors. I work as a full time CNC Machinist, part time pizza delivery driver, have a listing as a male model, and I am at this moment in time putting together a commercial business opportunity in real estate. I am a busy guy, who doesn’t get much time to socializes or have fun. Most of my free time, I try to relax and look for new endeavors I can complete while attending school.

College of Agriculture and Innovation

The agriculture business in Iowa can definitely affect my future success and accomplishments. Living in Iowa and knowing, these businesses operate throughout the state might serve as a potential employer in the future. Although, being a student who expects to transfer on after completing their AA in Business Administration. I might ask myself how a Finance major with a Bachelor’s degree serves in the agricultural business world. The answer, I don’t know, I might find myself working as an analyst within one of the larger corporations in Iowa or possibly outside the state. Of course, I am not anticipating or even looking to work within agriculture, although it might turn out my talents fit better here rather than investments.

Another factor of the agriculture business in Iowa, concerns legislative issues with budget policy or practices which, might involve government policy to set a standard or pass along financial assistance to an agriculture company. Here I might actually be affected by agriculture in a more indirect, but still direct fashion.  As a professional, I might enjoy the luxury of researching the cost factors of different plans of action to remedy environmental issue’s created by or affecting agriculture. Here I would review cost factors related to the issue and seek viable solutions to the problems. Although to complete the assessment, I would also need to analyze the solutions cost factors in order to successfully complete the assessment of the problem. For the position, like the one I am writing about. My finance degree and business education within a cooperation who handles these situations, most likely will require an analyst from different fields to get a comprehensive solution to solve the problem.

It is possible though I might eventually become a member or broker of a large insurance and investment group. As a professional in one of these positions, I might potentially be servicing clients within the Agricultural business world. Here farmers, coops, or other business directly serving the agriculture world. They might look to me to find them the policies and investment packages they need in order to secure their own and their employee’s future. Fortunately, for me I have looked into internships with companies who maintain these services and found I am better of taking my education further before I took any further action.

Reviewing these possibilities makes me realize my degree choice holds a variety of options and possibilities, I had not even considered. With large scale farming operations, implementation companies, herbicide, pesticide, fertilizer development and manufacturing firms. I know not all these companies fall exactly into Webster’s definition of agriculture, but they each remains’ closely connected to the business and industry we call, agriculture. With new innovations in agriculture and those innovation’s already being used today. In our future you can expect the people connected to these businesses to find a need for someone in Finance and real estate. Of course, I’ll have to make certain I can accommodate their needs successfully and excel beyond their expectations in order to undertake and handle their business needs.

Land of Opportunity

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 at 9:53 AM

Today, we have been asked to give our thoughts concerning opportunities in Iowa. In Iowa, like any other state in the United States we have an abundant number of opportunities. One opportunity although I’m sure it has already been addressed by some. Concerns the marketing of out-of-state companies to relocate here to make use of our states low cost of living, and land values. We could import businesses from the coasts and offer them an opportunity to move their operations here to lower their overhead cost. Of course, Iowans have attempted to bring other companies here before and in the past either our marketing did not match the company’s expectations or we just weren’t able to give them a package beneficial to their company’s needs. If we could develop our white collar business districts and commercial zones in the state with these outside businesses and blend them with one’s already operating here. We could boast our state’s economy, increase our commercial business districts and enrich our local communities with the benefits these companies bring with them. Of course in order to do so, we must increase our technology in these areas. These typical businesses could range from any business including; investment services, computer technology, medical equipment supplies, marketing and advertisement firms, and the list of options almost seems endless.

With the modern worlds capability to stay connected all over the globe almost any business infrastructure could be relocated here with proper planning and good logistical background knowledge. The only real hurdle to overcome might be from supply line changes. Meaning some businesses would be impossible and not effective to bring here for the sole reason their resources cost more to move here then to continue were they reside currently. Our best plan of action to take must be to make note of what our state currently possess now. Then look at which businesses actually turn a profit and after we have completed this assessment. We could look to broaden our horizons here, by marketing to companies who could fill the gap between what already exist and what could be managed here cost effectively.

Our best idea should be based around national shortcomings or business with high overhead cost which still earn a profit consistently, but could easily increase an expand within their market from lower expenses while operating here. Two main factors concerning relocations of a company can be expensive, and we must market these businesses appropriately. Best part, after reviewing the concerned risk associated within their presumed conditions we can look to compensate them accordingly with concerns affecting they’re cost inflicted from relocation of their businesses here. With resources not developed to their fullest potentials, considering those who might only lack funding to satisfy their requirements to develop into a sustainable and intricate part of our state. One of the main problems to make these opportunities possible, might be as simple as getting adequate research, credible sources’ without questionable contradiction, financial sponsorship, developers who can be routed to these opportunities, finding marketers to make an image for these new businesses, and of course state image. A few businesses to obviously stay away from offering the opportunity move here. Must definitely be those with poor manufacturing potentials, those avoiding foreclosure, and businesses without respectable compensation back to the state and surrounding communities.  Iowa, a good place to grow, live, and expand your business. With people who care and the honest Midwestern work ethic.

"UnEARTHing Iowa"

Today started off with a bang. With the early start of the morning and arrival at the Capital Building. The first hour of the day consisted of meeting, and getting background knowledge from the people who work at the Capitol. After our first meeting we were led on tours of the capitol Georgia Van Gundy, Christina Gruenhagen, and Billi Hunt. I personally found from an educational standpoint and the career path of Georgia to be the most interesting of the group. Her duties involving financial information used in decisions and business in the Capitol building. It seems though her position makes for a close working environment with Billi. Knowing I am a Business major, looking to transfer on to complete with a major in Finance and possibly a minor in real estate. Her concerns with legal issues and the questions I already find myself wondering from class work I have already completed. After the statements she made on how they address business matters and the work Billi does to ensure legal practices are followed. A relationship I am sure I will need to make for myself in my professional career, as well as my own future private business ventures.

The tour of the Capitol was very awe inspiring with the beautiful architecture, size, and spans of the property. Knowing Iowa spent $20 million on renovations in a pay as you go program. Seems like a lot of money at first, but realizing the importance and significance of the building as an important part of Iowa’s heritage and government structure. Then meeting with Governor Terry E. Brandstand, busy man I’m sure of it. Though, with the way he addresses his schedule, you might need to read between the lines and listen to the different organizations and businesses he works with on a daily basis. Definitely, a busy man though he holds himself together well even with a heavy work load.
I really enjoyed meeting the people at Pella, and touring their facility. Their company must maintain a major responsibility in their small community. Knowing they employ a significant number of the citizens and realizing these people aren’t just numbers, but instead their neighborhood community. The company’s size and time frames seem to be a logistical nightmare for the uneducated or inexperienced. Knowing they must order inventories in six months in advance. They must forecast sales from previous years and monitor trends in the both new homes and remodeling markets. Of course, as their staff members stated they also utilize branded techniques in the construction of the product lines. One item they surprised me with pertained to their two percent waste and how they sell their saw dust materials to a neighboring company for use in other marketable goods. With business innovations like these, one can only assume a prosperous future in Iowa. I can only hope businesses in my Home town of Dubuque, practice similar policies for my community.
The Veel Hoeden tour, though pressed for time left me a good feeling about a small community of minds gathering together to ensure success. The atmosphere and close proximity gave me the sense these people like to work around one another and made a solution to meeting others with the similar problems. They’re not afraid to welcome strangers and ask them to expand their networks. Sort of an outreach group of entrepreneurs who in some cases have already completed their corporate journey, and moved on to build their own structured business from these business experiences and knowledge they have gained along the way. Really cool people and I plan to contact them in the future with questions concerning my commercial building purchase next year.
The last two functions of the day the Leaders Reception and Rotary Diner Networking. Both groups had professionals from several different backgrounds. At the Winery I was able to get information from several different professionals, some possibly useful in my own future and some knowledge to just keep in mind along the way. The organizers in the Rotary Club helped to reemphasize what I learned after being invited to a local club meeting in my home town. I also, found their structure creates a small community of individuals who do beneficial things for their community and being a member can really benefit an individual’s business from other members influence. This group I am considering joining in my own community after I develop my private business from the drawing board to reality.
When I was looking back through the events of the day, I couldn’t believe the amount of useful information I was able to see and how what these people were doing related back to my own personal goals and education. Least we not forget the reason for coming here today, with networking being the topic and finding people who I could contact to mentor or show me the way to people who can help ascertain my professional career. Fortunately, met several people who gave me their business cards and who possess knowledge I believe to be useful for my future. I can’t wait to contact them and meet with a few of their colleges in the future to find out what other door’s they might unlock for me along the way.

The greatest I can contribute to Iowa’s future, can only be myself and willingness I have to make a difference in the future of Iowa’s future. I am intending on volunteering my time and charitable contributions to Iowa and already volunteer. Though, I am actually looking to begin to take some part in the communities who have helped me to achieve my success in the future.
