Government and Growth in Iowa
"UnEARTHing Iowa"
The theme of today was "UnEARTHing Iowa" - College of Government and Growth in Iowa. If you could write about atleast two of these topics from your experiences today.
Assume your dream job is in Iowa after school. 1) Describe the impact that the activites happening at the Capitol would affect your dream job (positively or negatively). Also, since you are living and working in Iowa, 2) talk about the impact that manufacturing has on Iowa and possibly your industry of choice. Finally, 3) you experienced a business simulation exercise this afternoon where you had to make business decisions in a competitive environment - share how you can carry over these skills in the competitive environment you might be in after school.

I have learned a lot today about Iowa’s history and interspersing facts about our state Capitol. We got to meet a state representative and climb up into the Capitols’ dome which is about 134 stairs. We also traveled to Pella where we visited Vermeer and learned about where they got...

I plan to pursue a career in commercial real estate, which is an industry that relies heavily on the decision of politicians. Issues of public zoning, property taxes, and corporate tax breaks are a daily matter of real estate development.
One of the problems we had with own decision making was...

During the first full day of LIU I gained some great advice from some business professionals at the Iowa State Capitol and in Pella, Iowa. Beginning the day in the capitol, Dusky Terry’s presentation about governmental processes and why we should care about them helped reemphasize the impact that government...

We started today at the State Capitol where discussion centered around the impact of government on businesses. Because of this we were asked to reflect on the ways government would impact a business of our own in our “dream” career. I guess my “dream” job would be a food critic...

Today started early. 7:30 AM was the departure from the hotel, by charter bus, to the Iowa Capital. It we were able to learn about how the State government in Iowa works; which was pretty cool. Especially since it was “eyes-on” not just reading it in a book. I hadn’t...

My dream job would be working as a Corporate Lawyer for a large company like Principal Financial. Of course, as a lawyer, legal issues would directly impact the work I am doing. I would only be directly impacted by manufacturing if I worked as a lawyer for a large manufacturer....

Visiting the state capitol today was an amazing experience. I learned so much in the short time that we were there. The building has been standing since before the turn of the twentieth century and is renovated frequently. There are five different kinds of marble inside, some imported from Europe....
